As I was playing so many different RPGs, from fantasy D&D to science-fiction in Starfinder, battling the mythos in Call of Cthulhu, down to solo games like 4AD, I thought I would collate some of the tools I've written into a single location.

Where do I start with these tools? Well, this is probably most relevant to me for the solo RPG game, Four Against Darkness, which I am playing lots of at the moment. I've written a bunch of custom rules that are slowly being published on my RPG blog, so the tools will also appear in this RPG tools section over time too.

Feel free to use and link too. If you find the tools useful, please let me know over on Twitter / X

Four Against Darkness

The game takes place as you control a small party, four strangely enough, as they delve into a random dungeon - full of skeletans, gremlins, orcs, ogres, lords of chaos, small fire-breathing dragons and so many more. From packs of vermin crawling through the darkness, to standard minions such as orcs, up to weird and wonderful monsters - finally culminating in the boss monsters. Beware of those ones, especially the Medusa boss - gaze attack is brutal.

What is 4AD and Why is it so good?

Well Four Against Darkness, my main game at the moment, is quick, rules light and heavily random and procedural. No two games are alike, and you do face genuine tough decisions - mainly about if / when you should turn back before you get burnt alive or turned to stone.

What it is not, is a fully fledged, deep, rich RPG game like Shadowrun, Pathfinder or Dungeons and Dragons. In 4AD, you can choose from eight classes/race, but each one takes up only a single page of A5 - unlike D&D5E where certain classes take up 8-12 pages of A4. Some would argue that Four Against Darkness isn't an RPG because its solo and its so roleplay light - but that doesn't sway my thoughts of the game.
